An Undersea Universe is an award-winning photograph that proves how patience and vision shape lasting images. First, Dennis Sotolongo captured the photograph on July 26, 1986, in the dark waters off Cozumel, Mexico. From the start, the image reflected his lifelong fascination with wildlife photography and the natural world.

Years later, the photograph gained international recognition. In 2005, An Undersea Universe won The International Library of Photography’s International Open Amateur Photography Competition. It was featured in the book Timeless Potraits ISBN-10: 0795152566 / ISBN-13: 9780795152566. As a result, the image appeared in several nature magazines and photography books. Through these publications, the photograph reached a broader audience.
At its core, the image shows a single jellyfish floating in complete darkness. Gently, its translucent bell glows under artificial light. Meanwhile, long and delicate tentacles drift below with graceful movement. Without distractions, the black background removes reef, divers, and depth. Because of this, only light and life remain in the frame.
Technically, Sotolongo created the photograph during the film photography era. At the time, he used a Nikonos III with a 28mm lens. Specifically, he shot at f/5.6, 1/30 second, using flash. In addition, he selected Kodak 64 (KDK-64) film rated at ISO 150. Without digital previews, every exposure demanded confidence and experience. Consequently, the flash reveals detail without overpowering the subject. Likewise, the slower shutter speed preserves natural motion.
Beyond technique, the Nikonos III carries historical importance. Originally, its design traced back to the Calypso Camera, also known as the Calypso-Phot. In the late 1950s, Jean de Wouters developed it with Jacques-Yves Cousteau aboard the Calypso. Because of this innovation, photographers could shoot underwater without bulky housings. Ultimately, the camera transformed marine photography.
